Maryland takes a run at Ohio State before fading down the stretch

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Maryland’s bid for what would have been a signature victory against No. 4 Ohio State began with a flourish but crumbled late, sending the Terrapins to their first loss of the season, 37-17, Saturday afternoon in a game players and coaches had indicated would serve as an assessment of the program’s progression.

Maryland (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) learned it still has plenty of ground to gain to narrow the gap with one of its conference’s blue bloods after it surrendered 27 unanswered points in the second half at Ohio Stadium and failed to move the ball with much consistency or urgency in front of an announced crowd of 104,974.
